Founded in Kurume, Japan in 1873, MoonStar started out producing Tabi (sock-like footwear with a rubber sole for workers). They are better known today for their classic plimsolls produced under the brand ‘Shoes Like Pottery’ – a reference to the manufacturing process with has similarities to the way ceramics are produced. The soles are fired in a kiln for a smooth but tough finish while the canvas comes from Kurume cloth produced on hand looms that give a unique texture.

tokyobike have partnered with Moonstar to produce a take on their classic Minima design – using the same vulcanisation process but with canvas instead of suede to create a light, everyday shoe perfect for on and off the bike.

Whilst the shoes are ‘mass produced’ there is an unusual level of craft and skill that goes into the manufacturing process and a beauty in the pride and dedication that the makers exude, well documented in the short film that follows.
